Edited by Thomas Hill, the Registers of Bramfield, Co. Suffolk cover the years 1539-1596 and 1693-1889. The preface of the book explains the missing years with the loss of the second book or registers, but the editor does attempt to fill in the gaps from other sources which adds greatly to this volume as source for Bramfield. The preface also includes many other useful snippets of information including lists of Churchwardens and some financial accounts.

The actual records of the registers themselves make up the vast bulk of this publication. There are approximately 3000 baptisms, 1000 marriages and 2000 burials included here. The burial registers are also noteworthy for the lengthy description of the dispute between John Pryme and the Vicar over the issue of payment of dues. Pryme was excommunicated but later a reconciliation was reached. The publication is completed by a 23 page name index.

For any one with family connections or an interest in Bramfield, Suffolk, this is a vital publication.

Allegations for Marriage Licences in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury in the County of Suffolk 1684-1839 Allegations for Marriage Licences in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury in the County of Suffolk 1684-1839

Ref: GBI8024suf
ISBN:

Published by the Harleian Society 1918-1921 in four volumes.

The very first entry in 1684 reads; John Murrell, of Lawshall, husbandman, & Sarah Richier, of Hepworth. Bondsman: Robert Garland, of Weltham, Husbandman. 3 Jan., 1684/5.

This class of records are incredibly valuable to the family historian, as prior to 1837 marriages in parish registers did not state the father's name, and also rarely stated an occupation of the groom.

Elian Helen, of Sudbury St. Peters, s.m. [single man], grocer, & Mary Ann Vincent, of Little Waldingfield, s.w. at same. 13 Jan 1818.

Wm. Mann, jun., of Bromley, Middlesex, grazier, s.m., & Maria Strutter, of St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds, at same. Bondsman John Stutter, of Bury St. Edmunds, gent. 19 Jan 1818.

John Cook, of Assington, s.m., & Mary Elizh. Vincent, of Little Waldingfield, 19 years (father Philip Vincent, of same), at same. 19 Jan 1818.

John Stickwood, of Sketchwoth, 19 years, & Sarah Hart, of same, s.w., 25 years. Edw. Stickwood, father of John Stickwood. Surrogate: J. Gee. 30 May 1755.

It is well worth noting that there are many people here who were from outside the county of Suffolk, so these records will appeal to a wide range of researchers. The four books are arranged in date order and are fully indexed for names.

Ancient Funeral Monuments - 1631 Ancient Funeral Monuments - 1631

Ref: 0470suf
ISBN:

A superb and very ancient book published in 1631 - gravestone & monumental inscriptions in churches in East Anglia, London, the home counties and the south east. Transcribed as they appeared in 1631 !!

Hundreds of these gravestones were destroyed during the Civil War of 1642.

The book is organised into dioceses and then the churches within each. The outer columns of each page contain the short references to the people whose gravestones appear. By nature, in this very early period, it was relatively unusual for a family to have a gravestone or monument. Some churches contain just a few, others contain many.

This very early and rare book is invaluable to genealogists. There is nothing else like it!
