Archive CD Books Ireland is a partnership company set up between Eneclann, a Trinity College-based company, and Archive CD Books in the UK. The partnership was set up to provide access to Irelandís rich collection of historical printed books to the growing audience worldwide of Irish history, genealogy and cultural enthusiasts, at an affordable price.
Archive CD Books Ireland exists to make reproductions of old books, documents and maps available on CD to genealogists, historians and to anyone interested in Irish history and culture. The project also aims to co-operate with libraries, museums and record offices to donate books to their collections, and create preservation images of their holdings, where they will be preserved for future generations.
The process to generate these digital versions will also help the future preservation of these important works. Firstly, digital imaging is being carried out using the latest state of the art equipment, which places no strain on the books, and emits no harmful infra-red and ultra-violet light. Secondly, the images are being generated at archive preservation standard that will ensure that they are not only a faithful reproduction of the original, but also of sufficiently high quality to reproduce in both electronic and print format.
A key part of the project is a partnership agreement with Trinity College Dublin granting access to their out of copyright collection. Trinity College Library is the largest library in Ireland and one of the largest in Europe. Founded in 1592 it is both an Irish and a British copyright library, and consequently houses the majority of works published regarding Ireland and Irish history. The Trinity College collection will be just one part of the overall Archive CD Books Ireland collection. In the future Archive CD Books hopes to extend its range to historic collections held by other libraries and repositories.
The project was launched on 23rd
March 2005 in the Old Library, Trinity College, Dublin. Click
